The Ergonomics Case for Folding Hand Trucks: What Safety Research Says About Protecting Workers

Musculoskeletal disorders remain one of the most costly categories of workplace injury. A 2026 study published in Work (SAGE Journals) compared three types of manual delivery trolleys — hand trucks, hand carts, and rolltainers — across 23 professional courier workers using electromyography and 3D biomechanical modeling. The finding: hand trucks imposed the lowest biomechanical demands among all trolley types tested, while hand carts produced the highest muscle activity and greatest lumbar compression and shear force.

Why pushing beats pulling. The same study found that pulling generally induced greater activation of upper-limb muscles and greater flexion of the lower arms and neck, whereas pushing resulted in greater trunk flexion. Hand trucks, with their upright handle geometry, allow operators to use a push-dominant motion that distributes force more efficiently through the lower body. In routine delivery tasks involving moderate loads, hand trucks are an ergonomically beneficial option.

The force threshold problem. CCOHS guidelines recommend that the initial pushing/pulling force should not exceed 320 N for males and 220 N for females, with sustained motion force limits of 230 N and 130 N respectively. The key variables that determine whether a hand truck stays within these limits are: wheel/castor size and number, handle orientation and height, overall cart weight, and cart stability. A folding hand truck with undersized plastic wheels requires significantly more force to initiate movement than one with properly sized polyurethane wheels — a difference that compounds over hundreds of daily movements.

Regulatory compliance as a procurement filter. European standard EN 1757 covers the safety of pedestrian-propelled industrial platform trucks, specifying design requirements, verification methods, and stability testing via formal tilt-table procedures. For commercial buyers, compliance with EN 1757 is not a formality — it is a signal that the manufacturer has invested in genuine safety engineering.

Our engineering response. Our folding hand trucks are designed around the ergonomic data: telescoping handles with vibration-dampening TPR grips that reduce hand fatigue; wheel diameters of 100–125 mm to maintain force efficiency on uneven surfaces; and six-wheel stair-climbing systems that eliminate the need to lift the cart and its load over steps. These aren't features — they're injury-prevention measures grounded in biomechanical research. We provide compliance documentation and test reports for enterprise procurement teams.
